Multidimensional Toxicity of Organophosphate Pesticides and Mitigation Strategies for Agricultural Sustainability

Authors:

Abstract
Organophosphate pesticides (OPs) remain essential yet controversial in global agriculture, demanding an urgent resolution of their efficacy-environmental protection paradox. This review provides an in-depth analysis of the toxicity mechanisms of OPs, primarily through oxidative stress induction, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition-mediated neurotoxicity, endocrine disruption, and multiorgan pathological effects. We highlight promising mitigation strategies, including natural antioxidants, advanced neuroprotective agents, neuroinflammatory inhibitors, nutraceutical interventions, and others, which synergistically alleviate the toxicity of OPs. Emerging technologies such as plant antioxidant system, microbial consortia, and CRISPR-based precision plant engineering are critically evaluated for their potential to mitigate ecotoxicity in agricultural systems. Furthermore, we propose an integrated OPs management framework that combines microbial pesticides and stimuli-responsive nanoremediators, supported by synergistic policy interventions. By bridging toxicological research with practical mitigation strategies, this review aims to promote safer and more sustainable agricultural practices, balancing effective crop protection with ecosystem resilience, in alignment with the “One Health” principle.
