Oxidation of Tar over Manganese Catalysts
This study investigates the effects of a catalytic modifier based on manganese salts of natural petroleum acids on the performance of tar oxidation and the properties of the resulting bitumen product. It is demonstrated that, compared to noncatalytic tar oxidation, the proposed catalyst not only more than doubles the process intensity but also significantly improves the product quality. IR spectroscopy showed that an optimal catalyst loading (0.3 wt %) provides an appreciable increase in the degree of oxidation (>30%) and aromaticity (>10%) of the bitumen, while preserving its aliphatic components, which act as a plasticizer. The formation of polar carbonyl groups enhances the adhesive capacity of the product, whereas the increased aromaticity favors its thermal stability as a binder. The study results validate the effectiveness of the proposed catalytic approach for producing bitumen with improved performance characteristics.

Synthesis and Properties of Diesters Based on Synthetic Petroleum Acids and 1,4-Butanediol
A mixture of synthetic petroleum acids (SPAs), obtained via liquid-phase oxidation of naphthene–paraffinic hydrocarbons from a kerosene fraction, was used for the catalytic esterification of 1,4-butanediol. Under optimal reaction conditions (a temperature of 120°C, a catalyst loading of 1.5 wt %, and a SPA/1,4-butanediol molar ratio of 2 : 1.5), a diester mixture was synthesized in 92% yield. These diesters were evaluated as plasticizers for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) grade S-6358. The PVC/diester blends exhibited a full swelling time of 5–6 h, which is 2–3 h shorter than that for commercial dioctyl phthalate, a commonly used plasticizer. Furthermore, the synthesized diester mixture was tested as a multifunctional additive for diesel fuels. At a concentration of 0.004 wt %, the diesters notably enhanced the thermo-oxidative stability of the diesel fuel. Separately, adding 0.05 wt % diesters lowered the cloud point of the fuel by 9°C (to –11°C) and its pour point by 5°C (to –25°C) without adversely affecting its cetane number (CN). These results demonstrate the feasibility of using SPAs as available feedstocks for functional materials and fuel additives.

Synthesis and Investigation of Ethylene Glycol Monoesters of Synthetic Petroleum Acids
The study describes an esterification process for the synthesis of ethylene glycol (EG) monoesters of synthetic petroleum acids (SPAs) in the presence of a heterogeneous catalyst based on a commercial coarse-dispersed anatase TiO2. The proposed method provides selective synthesis of monoesters in 89 wt % yield without the need for additional treatment of the desired product. The monoester was tested as a plasticizer for cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) and as an antioxidant additive for diesel fuels. It is shown that the plasticizing properties of this monoester are comparable to those of a commercial dibutyl sebacate commonly used for CAB plasticization. Moreover, in terms of specific impact toughness of CAB at subfreezing temperatures, the synthesized monoester exceeds the commercial plasticizer by more than 35%. Introducing 0.004 wt % of this monoester into a hydrotreated diesel fuel enhances the thermo-oxidative stability of the fuel by a factor of over ten.

Commercial Production of Bitumen via Oxidation of Vacuum Residue over Iron Catalysts
This study investigates the effects of introducing a feedstock-soluble catalyst based on iron salts of petroleum acids on the oxidation of crude oil vacuum residue (VR) to produce commercial bitumen. It is demonstrated that, compared to noncatalytic VR oxidation, injecting the catalyst into the petroleum feedstock provides a higher process efficiency (indicated by more than double the oxidation rate) with the bitumen product being distinguished by enhanced thermal stability and a higher ductility (>100 cm). IR spectroscopy showed a difference in the structural-group composition between the initial VR and the oxidation product, specifically an aromaticity increase and the formation of polysubstituted aromatics in the oxidate. Due to the acceleration of the oxidation process and the improvement of the product quality, the catalytic oxidation of VR provides a high potential for the implementation of this process strategy at industrial oil refineries. Furthermore, this approach can be recommended as the optimal available technique for mitigating the anthropogenic environmental impact.

Composition and Performance of Modern Antistatic Additives for Diesel and Jet Fuels
Antistatic additives are introduced into diesel and jet fuel formulations to ensure the safety of the fuel transportation and operation. Studying the structure and performance of these additives is of scientific and practical interest. Published data in this field are analyzed in the paper. The analysis shows that modern antistatic additives consist of several functional components of which the anionic component is the most important. In virtually all the formulations, this component is polysulfone, a copolymer of sulfur dioxide and α-olefins. Along with analysis of the published data, five commercial samples of antistatic additives were analyzed by spectroscopy and chromatography. The analysis confirmed critical significance of the polysulfone as an anionic component and allowed determination of the composition and structure of other components of the additive: cationic and acid components and the solvent.
