Influence of lithologic–geomorphic coupled factors on the spatial distribution of dolines in Yanyuan of SW China
Karst regions experiencing rocky desertification suffer severe environmental issues, including soil erosion and cropland loss, that constrain socioeconomic development. Dolines are a typical karst landform in such regions that can exacerbate rocky desertification, but the relationship between lithologic–geomorphic coupled factors and the spatial distribution of dolines remain poorly understood. This study combines high-resolution remote sensing with kernel density estimation and correlation analyses to investigate how lithologic–geomorphic coupled factors regulate the spatial distribution of dolines in Yanyuan, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, southwestern China. The results show that the spatial distribution of dolines exhibited distinct clustering behavior (Moran’s I = 0.987, p < 0.01) and that coupled factors possess stronger explanatory power than univariate factors (η² = 0.214). Spatial clustering of dolines is notably high in zones coupling limestone and intermediate-elevation plains, zones coupling Quaternary loose sediment and intermediate-elevation plains, and zones coupling clastic rock intercalated with limestone and intermediate-relief intermediate-elevation mountains. In contrast, clustering is less pronounced in zones coupling limestone with intermediate-relief high-elevation mountains. Lower topographic relief create more favorable conditions for doline formation and clustering. These findings improve understanding of the distribution and formation mechanisms of dolines at the regional scale and provide a scientific basis for their management in karst regions experiencing rocky desertification.

Quantitative Characteristics and Environmental Interpretation of Vegetation Restoration in Burned Areas of the Dry Valleys of Southwest China
Fire is a common natural disturbance in forest ecosystems and plays an important role in subsequent vegetation patterns. Based on the spatial sequence method, adopted as an alternative to the time successional sequence method, we selected burned areas in different locations in the Anning River Basin, which encompasses typical dry valleys. Quadrat surveys and quantitative classification were used to identify and classify the vegetation and distribution pattern and to carry out environmental interpretation during the natural restoration process after a forest fire. The results showed the following: (1) in the early stage of natural recovery after a forest fire disturbance, the vegetation community could be divided into seven community types, and Quercus guyavaefolia H. Leveille (Qg) was the dominant species in the community; (2) the vegetation samples could be divided into five ecological types, and the classification and distribution pattern of community types in this region changed most notably with altitude; and (3) a detrended correspondence analysis could be used to accurately classify vegetation community types, while a detrended canonical correspondence analysis could reveal the relationships between species and environmental factors. This study provides a scientific basis for guiding the restoration of ecosystem structural stability and biodiversity in burned areas.

Forest Fire Driving Factors and Fire Risk Zoning Based on an Optimal Parameter Logistic Regression Model: A Case Study of the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, China
Planning the analyses of the spatial distribution and driving factors of forest fires and regionalizing fire risks is an important part of forest fire management. Based on the Landsat-8 active fire dataset of the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture from 2014 to 2021, this paper proposes an optimal parameter logistic regression (OPLR) model, conducts forest fire risk zoning research under the optimal spatial analysis scale and model parameters, and establishes a forest fire risk prediction model. The results showed that the spatial unit of the optimal spatial analysis scale in the study area was 5 km and that the prediction accuracy of the OPLR was about 81%. The climate was the main driving factor of forest fires, while temperature had the greatest influence on the probability of forest fires. According to the forest fire prediction model, mapping the fire risk zoning, in which the medium- and high-risk area was 6021.13 km2, accounted for 9.99% of the study area. The results contribute to a better understanding of forest fire management based on the local environmental characteristics of the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture and provide a reference for related forest fire prevention and control management.

The Influence of Short-Term Heavy Rainfall on Hydraulic Characteristics and Rill Formation in the Yuanmou Dry-Hot Valley
Rill erosion is one of the major environmental problems in the world; it is an important factor with regard to land degradation and has a serious impact on production and daily life in the region. The widely distributed Yuanmou group stratum promotes the development of rill erosion, whereby the strong time-concentrated rainfall and the alternating arid-humid climate prepare the ground for the development of rills in soils. Therefore, a study of the processes of slope rill erosion was carried out, and a gravel-soil slope in the Yuanmou dry-hot valley was chosen to simulate short-term heavy rainfall (25 mm/h) (No. 1 plot) and moderate rainfall (15 mm/h) (No. 2 plot), to study the erosion processes of soil and the dynamic characteristics of runoff involved in erosion. The study results showed that the width of runoff was significantly different between the two plots, while the depth of runoff was not significantly different. During the rill formation process, the width of the two plots first decreased and then increased with increasing washout duration, while its depth did not change significantly. Flow was the key factor in determining the hydraulic characteristics of runoff, and it had a significant or extremely significant positive correlation with hydraulic characteristics parameters, except in the case of Fr (Froude number) (r = 0.039). The total sediment content (CS) of plot No. 1 (0.158 g/cm3) was significantly different from that of plot No. 2 (0.153 g/cm3), and both CSs in the two plots decreased with increasing washout duration. The CS had an extremely significant negative correlation with τ (runoff shear force) (r = −0.863 **) and DW-f (Darcy-Weisbach drag coefficient) (r = −0.863 **) and a significant negative correlation with Re (Reynolds number) (r = −0.735 *) in the short-term heavy rainfall experiment, while the CS had a significant positive correlation with V (velocity) (r = 0.814 *), R (hydraulic radius) (r = 0.811 *) and P (unit stream power) (r = 0.811 *) in the moderate rainfall experiment. The results of this study will help guide further examination of the processes involved in the dynamic mechanisms of rill erosion on slopes under short-term heavy rainfall conditions.

Topographic Factors Drive Short-Term Understory Revegetation in Burned Areas
Fire is a disturbance factor in forest ecosystems which has an important influence on vegetation succession. In order to reveal the natural recovery characteristics of the understory vegetation and its response to topographic factors (elevation, slope position, aspect and slope) after fire in subtropical forests, a typical subtropical forest (Xide County, China) was selected as the study area. Based on quadrat surveys and correlation analyses, the main results of this study were as follows. (1) Within four months after a fire, a total of 71 species, 52 genera and 20 families of understory vegetation species were increased, representing a rapid recovery after a fire. The total number of genera and species of understory vegetation increased by 157% and 209%, respectively. (2) Different burning intensities had different effects on the recovery of vegetation species diversity. The change in Margalef richness index was the most significant, increasing by 5.44 and 5.16 in lightly and severely burned areas, respectively. (3) The vegetation community could be divided into six types after restoration. (4) Elevation and slope were significantly correlated with the diversity and distribution characteristics of understory vegetation in the burned area. This study is useful to understand the characteristics of the short-term natural recovery of understory vegetation in subtropical forests after fire, to identify the relationship between vegetation and topographic factors in burned areas, and to provide a scientific basis for vegetation recovery.

Influence of Topographic Factors on the Characteristics of Gully Systems in Mountainous Areas of Ningnan Dry-Hot Valley, SW China
A gully system is an important indicator that reflects the development of regional topography and landforms, and topography is one of the most important factors affecting the development of gullies. However, at present, research on the impact of topography on the development of gully systems in the mountainous area of Ningnan dry-hot valley still needs to be strengthened. In order to study the characteristics of gullies and the influence of topography on the development of gully systems, based on both the visual interpretation of remote sensing images and field investigations, five topographic factors (elevation, slope gradient, aspect, relief, and dissection) were employed and three gully erosion indexes (gully length, density, and frequency) were calculated. The geographical information system was used in this study to carry out the spatial analysis, Ward’s hierarchical clustering and correlation analysis. Results showed that the development of gully systems is greatly affected by the degree of relief and dissection, and there is a significant positive correlation (p < 0.01; p < 0.05), while elevation, slope gradient and aspect have little influence on it. Analysis of the gully systems showed that the gully erosion is the most intense in the area with an elevation of 2800–3200 m and slope gradients ≥ 38°. Furthermore, the degree of erosion on shady slopes was greater than that on sunny slopes. These results will help us to understand the spatial distribution and formation of gully systems in mountainous areas.
