A bibliometric analysis of the development of autonomous ships in inland waterway transport
Inland waterway transport (IWT) plays a critical role in global logistics, offering large-capacity, long-distance transport at a lower cost. Recently, the advent of autonomous ships has promised to revolutionize efficiency and sustainability within the shipping industry. While existing research predominantly targets maritime settings, the distinct challenges of inland waterways such as fluctuating water depths, varying river currents, and confined channels demand tailored technological solutions. This study provides a thorough bibliometric analysis of autonomous ships in inland waterway transport, based on 163 publications from the Web of Science (WoS) core collection. This study identifies key technological milestones in this field and highlights the research gaps of adapting maritime autonomous ship technologies to inland waterways. The pressing need for customized solutions is also discussed. By reviewing the current landscape, this study contributes to the field as a beneficial reference for researchers, industry professionals, and policymakers, promoting the development of autonomous ship technology in inland waterways.

Machine Learning in Maritime Safety for Autonomous Shipping: A Bibliometric Review and Future Trends
Autonomous vessels are becoming paramount to ocean transportation, while they also face complex risks in dynamic marine environments. Machine learning plays a crucial role in enhancing maritime safety by leveraging its data analysis and predictive capabilities. However, there has been no review grounded in bibliometric analysis in this field. To explore the research evolution and knowledge frontier in the field of maritime safety for autonomous shipping, a bibliometric analysis was conducted using 719 publications from the Web of Science database, covering the period from 2000 up to May 2024. This study utilized VOSviewer, alongside traditional literature analysis methods, to construct a knowledge network map and perform cluster analysis, thereby identifying research hotspots, evolution trends, and emerging knowledge frontiers. The findings reveal a robust cooperative network among journals, researchers, research institutions, and countries or regions, underscoring the interdisciplinary nature of this research domain. Through the review, we found that maritime safety machine learning methods are evolving toward a systematic and comprehensive direction, and the integration with AI and human interaction may be the next bellwether. Future research will concentrate on three main areas: evolving safety objectives towards proactive management and autonomous coordination, developing advanced safety technologies, such as bio-inspired sensors, quantum machine learning, and self-healing systems, and enhancing decision-making with machine learning algorithms such as generative adversarial networks (GANs), hierarchical reinforcement learning (HRL), and federated learning. By visualizing collaborative networks, analyzing evolutionary trends, and identifying research hotspots, this study lays a groundwork for pioneering advancements and sets a visionary angle for the future of safety in autonomous shipping. Moreover, it also facilitates partnerships between industry and academia, making for concerted efforts in the domain of USVs.

Formation Control of a Multi-Unmanned Surface Vessel System: A Bibliometric Analysis
This study provides an overview of the literature on multi-unmanned surface vessel (multi-USV) systems, addressing the increasing attention on formation control of USVs due to their enhanced task execution ability, efficiency, and robustness in complex marine environments. Despite numerous studies on USVs covering fields, such as autonomous decision making, motion control, perception, and communication technologies, there is a significant lack of systematic literature review and bibliometric analysis specifically focused on a multi-USV system. This study aims to summarize advancements in multi-USV research, highlighting key aspects, including publication trends, influential scholars and papers, research hotspots, challenges, and future opportunities. By reviewing the current state of multi-USV research, this study contributes to the field as a beneficial reference for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers. It will not only highlight the progress made so far but also shed light on the gap that needs to be addressed to advance the field.

Evaluation of Ergonomic Risks for Construction Workers Based on Multicriteria Decision Framework with the Integration of Spherical Fuzzy Set and Alternative Queuing Method
Ergonomic risks critically impact workers’ occupational health, safety, and productivity, and thereby the sustainability of a workforce. In the construction industry, the physical demands and dynamic environment exposes workers to various ergonomic hazards. While previous research has mainly focused on postural risks, there is a need to broaden the scope to include more relevant factors and assess them systematically. This study introduces a multi-criteria decision framework integrating the Spherical Fuzzy Sets (SFSs) and Alternative Queuing Method (AQM) to evaluate and prioritize ergonomic hazards. First, SFSs are employed to quantify the linguistic expressions of experts, addressing the inherent vagueness and uncertainty. Then, an entropy-based objective weighting method is adopted to determine the criteria weights. Finally, AQM is utilized to generate the risk priority. The proposed method has been implemented in a real-life construction project, where “overexertion due to unreasonable task organization”, “hypertension and heart diseases”, and “existing WMSD record” are identified as the top three ergonomic hazards. Then, a thorough discussion of intervention strategies regarding different risk categories is presented to facilitate ergonomic interventions. This proposed decision support system can promote effective ergonomic risk management, benefiting workers’ health and well-being and contributing to the sustainable workforce development of the construction industry.

A Bibliometric Analysis and Overall Review of the New Technology and Development of Unmanned Surface Vessels
With the significant role that Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs) could play in industry, the military and the transformation of ocean engineering, a growing research interest in USVs is attracted to their innovation, new technology and automation. Yet, there has been no comprehensive review grounded in bibliometric analysis, which concentrates on the most recent technological advancements and developments in USVs. To provide deeper insight into the relevant research trends, this study employs a bibliometric analysis to examine the basic features of the literature from 2000 to 2023, and identifies the key research hotspots and modeling techniques by reviewing their current statuses and the recent efforts made in these areas. Based on the analysis of the temporal and spatial trends, disciplines and journals’ distribution, institutions, authors and citations, the publications relating to the new technology of USVs are assessed based on their keywords and the term analysis in the literature; six future research directions are proposed, including enhanced intelligence and autonomy, highly integrated sensor systems and multi-modal task execution, extended endurance and resilience, satellite communication and interconnectivity, eco-friendly and sustainable practices and safety and defense. The scientific literature is reviewed in a systematic way using a comparative analysis of existing tools, and the results greatly contribute to understanding the overall situation of new technology in USVs. This paper is enlightening to students, international scholars and institutions, as it can facilitate partnerships between industry and academia to allow for concerted efforts to be made in the domain of USVs.

Maritime Broadband Communication: Wireless Channel Measurement and Characteristic Analysis for Offshore Waters
For a long time, the development of maritime communication has been restricted by the low data rate, high-latency and high cost of the current communication systems. The upgrade of new generation mobile communication technologies is attracting more and more attention to conduct a shore-based broadband mobile communication network with high-latency and high reliability to serve the maritime industries. This paper presents a solution by means of building a ship-to-infrastructure (S2I) and a ship-to-ship (S2S) wireless communication networks for an offshore region. We characterize the S2I and S2S channels at 5.9 GHz band based on the channel measurements in realistic environments. The channel characteristics, including power delay profile, delay spread, propagation path loss, are extracted and analyzed. In view of the difference between marine and terrestrial communications, we analyze the influencing factors of the offshore water, including effective reflection, divergence and shadowing from the water surface, and diffraction loss caused by the earth curvature. We also predict the power coverage range and the channel capacity for S2I and S2S wireless communications. Finally, the communication performance is evaluated according to the channel measurement and characterization analysis. The research results can be a reference for the construction of maritime communication networks.
