Rationally Designed Pentapeptide Analogs of Aβ19–23 Fragment as Potent Inhibitors of Aβ42 Aggregation
Amyloid beta (Aβ42 and Aβ40) aggregation, along with neurofibrillary tangles, is one of the major neurotoxic events responsible for the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Many potent peptide-based inhibitors mainly focusing on central hydrophobic core Aβ16–20 (KLVFF) have been reported in recent years. Herein, we report pentapeptides 1–4, based on the β-turn-inducing fragment Aβ19–23 (FFAED). The synthesis of peptides 1–4 was carried out using Fmoc/tBu-based solid-phase peptide synthesis technique, and it was found that pentapeptide 3 potently inhibit the aggregation propensity of Aβ42, when incubated with it at 37 °C for 48 h. The aggregation inhibition study was conducted using thioflavin T-based fluorescence assay and circular dichroism spectroscopy, and supported by transmission electron microscope imaging. The conformational change on the aggregation of Aβ42 and aggregation inhibition by peptides 1–4 was further evaluated using 1H–15N HSQC NMR spectroscopy. The results demonstrated that the most potent analog, peptide 3, effectively disrupts the aggregation process. This study is the first to demonstrate that an Aβ19–23 fragment mimic can disrupt the aggregation propensity of Aβ42.

Molecular Modification of Queen Bee Acid and 10-Hydroxydecanoic Acid with Specific Tripeptides: Rational Design, Organic Synthesis, and Assessment for Prohealing and Antimicrobial Hydrogel Properties
Royal jelly and medical grade honey are traditionally used in treating wounds and infections, although their effectiveness is often variable and insufficient. To overcome their limitations, we created novel amphiphiles by modifying the main reparative and antimicrobial components, queen bee acid (hda) and 10-hydroxyl-decanoic acid (hdaa), through peptide bonding with specific tripeptides. Our molecular design incorporated amphiphile targets as being biocompatible in wound healing, biodegradable, non-toxic, hydrogelable, prohealing, and antimicrobial. The amphiphilic molecules were designed in a hda(hdaa)-aa1-aa2-aa3 structural model with rational selection criteria for each moiety, prepared via Rink/Fmoc-tBu-based solid-phase peptide synthesis, and structurally verified by NMR and LC–MS/MS. We tested several amphiphiles among those containing moieties of hda or hdaa and isoleucine–leucine–aspartate (ILD-amidated) or IL-lysine (ILK-NH2). These tests were conducted to evaluate their prohealing and antimicrobial hydrogel properties. Our observation of their hydrogelation and hydrogel-rheology showed that they can form hydrogels with stable elastic moduli and injectable shear-thinning properties, which are suitable for cell and tissue repair and regeneration. Our disc-diffusion assay demonstrated that hdaa-ILK-NH2 markedly inhibited Staphylococcus aureus. Future research is needed to comprehensively evaluate the prohealing and antimicrobial properties of these novel molecules modified from hda and hdaa with tripeptides.

CuO nanorod arrays by gas-phase cation exchange for efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting
CuO has been considered a promising candidate for photoelectrochemical water splitting electrodes owing to its suitable bandgap, favorable band alignments, and earth-abundant nature. In this paper, a novel gas-phase cation exchange method was developed to synthesize CuO nanorod arrays by using ZnO nanorod arrays as the template. ZnO nanorods were fully converted to CuO nanorods with aspect ratios of 10–20 at the temperature range from 350 to 600 °C. The as-synthesized CuO nanorods exhibit a photocurrent as high as 2.42 mA cm−2 at 0 V vs. RHE (reversible hydrogen electrode) under 1.5 AM solar irradiation, demonstrating the potential as the photoelectrode for efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting. Our method provides a new approach for the rational fabrication of high-performance CuO-based nanodevices.

Metal Decoration and Magnetic Field Effect on the Electrical Breakdown Voltage for ZnO Nanorods Gas Ionization Sensor
ZnO nanorod arrays with sharp tips were synthesized via chemical vapor deposition and utilized as the anode for gas ionization sensor. The effects of metal (Mn, Ni81Fe19 and Au) decoration and magnetic field on the electrical breakdown voltage were studied. Compared with the bare ZnO nanorod, metal decorated ZnO nanorod arrays in the magnetic field can effectively reduce the breakdown voltage for the air to 20 V. The possible mechanism is that metal decoration produces small size protuberance on the surface of ZnO nanorods and then enhances the electrical field near the tips. The magnetic field exerts action on the motion of the electron and therefore increases electron impact ionization efficiency and second electron emission efficiency.

Synthesis of FeP nanotube arrays as negative electrode for solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor
Recently, metal phosphides have attracted considerable attention as promising electrode materials for supercapacitors. In this work, FeP nanotube arrays have been successfully synthesized on carbon cloth using ZnO nanorod arrays as the sacrificial templets, via a phosphidation process. The dimensions of the FeP nanotubes are characterized using SEM and TEM showing the diameter to be approximately 200 nm and with a wall thickness of 50–100 nm. The tubular structure of FeP nanotubes provides a facile ion pathway and reduced inner inactive material, thus they are favorable for supercapacitor applications. As a result, the as-synthesized FeP nanotube arrays deliver an improved specific capacitance of 149.11 F g −1 and a high areal capacitance of 300.1 mF cm −2 at a current density of 1 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, an MnO 2 //FeP solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor was fabricated with a high areal capacitance of 142 mF cm −2 , which indicates the great potential of FeP nanotube arrays to be a high-performing negative electrode material for supercapacitors.
