by Marco Antonio Peñaloza López, William David Chicaiza Salazar, Sergio I. Palomino Resendiz, Diego A. Flores Hernández, Ascensión Zafra Cabeza, Juan Manuel Escaño González

by Marco Antonio Peñaloza López, Sergio Palomino Resendiz, Diego Flores Hernández

  • Embedded Energy Monitoring System for Solar Applications

    by Luis R. Islas-Estrada, Diego A. Flores-Hernández

In recent years, the use of solar technology as an alternative to conventional methods of electricity generation has increased. However, they have a low conversion efficiency; one way to increase energy production is by using Solar Tracking Systems (STS), which cause energy expenditure. Monitoring systems are required to calculate the energy balance between produced and consumed. In this research, the design and implementation from a concurrent approach of an embedded system for energy monitoring in solar applications is presented, obtaining a low energy consumption, high connectivity, scalable, modular, and open architecture system. Experimental tests were carried out considering five proposed energy-saving strategies. These tests recorded the energy consumption of actuators, electronic hardware, and generated power, resulting in a 16.47% increase in the energy budget and a reduction in the global power consumption of 7.27%. Notably, the developed embedded system exhibited a low energy consumption of 0.326Wh.

  • Embedded System for Quadruped Robot in Mammalian Configuration

by Cruz F. López Olvera, Diego A. Flores-Hernández

The legged robots have a better performance than the wheeled and tracked mobile robots for some applications. The development of quadruped robots has increased in the last years mainly with the mammalian configuration due to the velocity of displacement and for the implementation of new control strategies that improve its stability. However, it is necessary to integrate embedded systems into the quadruped robot design to increase the overall performance. The proposed research presents the development of an integrated system composed of a quadruped robot in mammalian configuration and an embedded system with a concurrent methodology that ensures harmonic integration. The system was tested under real environments, on flat, sandy, and rocky terrains. The experimental results were analyzed with Kinovea software, obtaining a maximum velocity in the flat terrain with 0.43m/s, 0.2m/s in sandy terrain, and 0.345 m/s in rocky. Finally, an embedded system is a factor key to improving the quadruped robot’s performance because it allows for modification of the behavior through the implementation of unconventional control strategies, to make the robot smaller, and it is possible to integrate tools of IoT that are necessary for the new applications.

by Marco Antonio Peñaloza-Lopez, Sergio Isaí Palomino-Resendiz, Diego Alonso Flores-Hernández, Cesar Ulises Solís-Cervantes, Roberto Luis Palomino-Resendiz

A Novel Tracking Strategy Based on Real-Time Monitoring to Increase the Lifetime of Dual-Axis Solar Tracking Systems

    by Diego A. Flores-Hernández, Luis R. Islas-Estrada, Sergio I. Palomino-Resendiz

Solar tracking systems allow an increase in the use of solar energy for its conversion with photovoltaic technology due to the alignment with the sun. However, there is a compromise between tracking accuracy and the energy required to perform the movement action. Consequently, the wear of the tracker components increases, reducing its useful lifetime and affecting the profitability of these systems. The present research develops a novel tracking strategy based on real-time measurements to increase the lifetime without reducing the energy productivity of the tracking systems. The proposed approach is verified experimentally by implementing the real-time decision-making algorithm and a conventional tracking algorithm in identical tracking systems under the same weather conditions. The proposed strategy reduces energy consumption by 14.18% due to the tracking action, maintaining a practically identical energy generation between both systems. The findings highlight a 53.33% reduction in the movements required for tracking and a 60.77% reduction in operation time, which translates into a 6.8-fold increase in the lifetime of the solar tracking system under the experimental conditions applied. The results are promising, so this research initiates and motivates the development of more complex models to increase the useful life of the tracking systems and their profitability and environmental impact concurrently.

Proximity Sensor for Measuring Social Interaction in a School Environment

by Tania Karina Hernández-Heredia, Cesar Fabián Reyes-Manzano, Diego Alonso Flores-Hernández, Gabriel Ramos-Fernández, Lev Guzmán-Vargas

Social interactions are characterized by being very diverse and changing over time. Understanding this diversity and dynamics, as well as their emerging patterns, is of great interest from social, health, and educational perspectives. The development of new devices has been made possible in recent years by advances in applied technology. This paper presents the design and development of a novel device composed of several sensors. Specifically, we propose a proximity sensor integrated by three devices: a Bluetooth sensor, a global positioning system (GPS) unit and an accelerometer. By means of this sensor it is possible to detect the presence of neighboring sensors in various configurations and operating conditions. Profiles based on the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) exhibit behavior consistent with that reported by empirical relationships. The present sensor is functional in detecting the proximity of other sensors and is thus useful for the identification of interactions between people in relevant contexts such as schools.

Design and Implementation of Extremum-Seeking Control Based on MPPT for Dual-Axis Solar Tracker

by Cesar Ulises Solís-Cervantes, Sergio Isai Palomino-Resendiz, Diego Alonso Flores-Hernández, Marco Antonio Peñaloza-López, Carlos Manuel Montelongo-Vazquez

The increase in the production efficiency of photovoltaic technology depends on its alignment in relation to the solar position. Solar tracking systems perform the tracking action by implementing control algorithms that help the reduction of tracking errors. However, conventional algorithms can reduce the life of actuators and mechanisms due to control action, significantly reducing operation times and profitability. In this article, an unconventional control scheme is developed to address the mentioned challenges, presenting the design and implementation of an extremum-seeking control to perform maximum power point tracking for a two-axis solar tracker instrumented with a solar module. The proposed controller is governed by the dynamics of a classic proportional-integral scheme and assisted by sensorless feedback. Also, it has an anti-wind-up-type configuration for the integral component and counts with a variable amplitude for the dither signal. The proposal is validated experimentally by comparison between a fixed system and a two-axis system in azimuth-elevation configuration. In addition, two performance indices are defined and analyzed, system energy production and tracking error. The results show that the proposal allows producing up to 27.75% more than a fixed system, considering the tracker energy consumption due to the tracking action and a pointing accuracy with ±1.8° deviation. Finally, an analysis and discussion are provided based on the results, concluding that the proposed algorithm is a viable alternative to increase the performance of tracked photovoltaic systems.
