Implementation of Postfault Decoupling Vector Control and Mitigation of Current Ripple for Five-Phase Fault-Tolerant PM Machine Under Single-Phase Open-Circuit Fault
The multiphase machine is a competitive candidate for applications where uninterrupted operation is demanded under post-fault conditions. In this paper, the decoupling vector control for a surface mounted five-phase permanent-magnet (PM) synchronous machine (PMSM) under single-phase open-circuit fault is investigated. The decoupled mathematical model of the five-phase PMSM under single-phase open-circuit fault is derived. Then, two post-fault control strategies are obtained, which are based on the principles of minimum copper loss and equal amplitudes of currents, respectively. The post-fault control strategy based on the feed-forward compensation is proposed in order to eliminate the influences of certain factors and decrease the current ripple. The validity of the post-fault control strategies is proved by experiments.

Research on a 20-Slot/22-Pole Five-Phase Fault-Tolerant PMSM Used for Four-Wheel-Drive Electric Vehicles
This paper presents a five-phase fault-tolerant permanent-magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) used for electric vehicles. In multiphase fault-tolerant PMSMs equipped with fractional-slot concentrated windings, excessive magneto-motive force (MMF) harmonics can lead to thermal demagnetization of the permanent magnets (PMs). In order to reduce the lower-order harmonics, the origins of the 2-pole harmonic in conventional winding configurations are investigated, and an unequal-turn winding configuration is applied to cancel the lower-order harmonics. The main electromagnetic performances of the unequal-turn winding configuration are investigated and compared with conventional winding topologies. Based on the principle of maintaining constant instantaneous power, the fault-tolerant control strategies for open-circuits of up to two phases are developed. All of the investigations are verified by finite element analysis (FEA) results.

Harmonic Analysis and Fault-Tolerant Capability of a Semi-12-Phase Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Machine Used for EVs
This paper deals with a fault-tolerant semi-12-phase permanent-magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) used for electric vehicles. High fault-tolerant and low toque ripple features are achieved by employing fractional slot concentrated windings (FSCWs) and open windings. Excessive magnetomotive force (MMF) harmonic components can lead to thermal demagnetization of rotor magnets as well as high core loss. An improved all-teeth-wound winding disposition that changes the winding factor of each harmonic is applied to suppress harmonics. A relatively large slot leakage inductance that limits the short-circuit current (SCC) induced in the short-circuited winding is proposed to deal with short-circuit fault. Fault-tolerant controls up to two phases open circuited are investigated in this paper based on keeping the same torque-producing MMF. The fault-tolerant control strategies corresponding to each faulty mode are studied and compared to ensure high performance operation.
