Study on the Optimization and Oxygen-Enrichment Effect of Ventilation Scheme in a Blind Heading of Plateau Mine

by Zijun Li, Rongrong Li, Yu Xu, Yuanyuan Xu

There are abundant mineral resources in plateau areas, but it is difficult to extract them safely because the problem of hypoxia in plateau mines seriously affects the life and health of workers. In order to address the problem of hypoxia in the blind heading of a plateau metal mine, a three-dimensional roadway model was established based on field data of the Pulang copper mine in Yunnan province, China. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method was used to explore the optimal type of oxygen supply duct outlet, and to reveal the oxygen diffusion law influencing different ventilation factors. Grey correlation analysis was used to study the correlation values of the ventilation factors on the oxygen-enrichment effect in blind headings, such as forcing duct position, exhausting duct position, and extraction pressure ratio. The results demonstrated that the oxygen-enrichment effect of a slit oxygen outlet was better than that of the traditional oxygen supply method. When the direction of the oxygen outlet hole was 30° and the height above the roadway floor was 1.95 m, the oxygen increase effect was better than other forms of oxygen supply duct outlets. Grey correlation analysis revealed that the major influencing factors of the oxygen-enrichment effect in the roadway of the plateau mine, were, in descending order, as follows: forcing duct position, extraction pressure ratio, and exhausting duct position. This study has a positive guiding significance for improving the respiration environment in blind headings of plateau mines.

  • Adaptive-weight water quality assessment and human health risk analysis for river water in Hong Kong

by Qiaoli Wang, Zijun Li, Yu Xu, Rongrong Li, Mengsheng Zhang

The water quality of Hong Kong’s four water control zones (Tolo Harbour and Channel, Port Shelter, Victoria Harbour, and Junk Bay) is of vital importance and has attracted much attention. This study aims to more objectively and comprehensively assess the water quality and its health impact based on the four-year monitoring data of 21 parameters collected from four zones. First, physicochemical characteristics of the water system were investigated based on multivariate statistical approaches, including Kruskal-Wallis test, hierarchical cluster analysis, and Mann-Kendall test. Then, water quality levels over space and time and the element sources were analyzed using adaptive-weight water quality index (AWQI) method, and factor analysis, respectively. Finally, the potential harm of trace elements for humankind was identified based on the health risk assessment model. The results revealed that (1) the values of more than half of the water quality parameters exhibited significant interannual changes, and the values of all parameters distinctly varied over space; (2) The water quality status in four water control zones showed a steady and long-term improvement trend from 2016 to 2019; (3) The sources of pollution elements impacting water quality status were related to the comprehensive influence of human activities and natural processes; (4) The carcinogenic risks of all trace elements were negligible or acceptable, while Mn and As may cause noncarcinogenic harm to humankind.

Numerical Analysis on the Thermal Performance in an Excavating Roadway with Auxiliary Ventilation System

by Zijun Li, Huasen Liu, Yu Xu, Rongrong Li, Mintao Jia, Mengsheng Zhang

A steady and proper thermal environment in deep underground is imperative to ensure worker health and production safety. Understanding the thermal performance in the roadway is the premise of temperature prediction; ventilation design; and improvement in cooling efficiency. A full coupled model incorporated with a moving mesh method was adopted; reflecting the dynamic condition of roadway construction. This study revealed the characteristics of the thermal performance and its evolution law in an excavating roadway. Several scenarios were performed to examine the designs of the auxiliary ventilation system on thermal performance in the roadway. The results show that there is a limitation in the cooling effect by continuously increasing the ventilation volume. Reducing the diameter of the air duct or distances between the duct outlet and the working face will aggravate the heat hazard in the roadway. The heat release from the roadway wall increases with the increase of the advance rate of the working face or roadway section size. Furthermore; an orthogonal experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of major factors on the average air temperature and local heat accumulation in the roadway

Study on the Oxygen Enrichment Effect of Individual Oxygen-Supply Device in a Tunnel of Plateau Mine

by Zijun Li, Rongrong Li, Yu Xu, Yuanyuan Xu

Complex characteristics of the plateau environment such as low oxygen content seriously restrict the exploitation of abundant mineral resources in plateau areas. To regulate the hypoxia environment and improve the comfort of workers engaged in intense physical labor like tunnel excavation operations in plateau mines, an individual oxygen-supply device for tunnel of plateau mine was proposed to create local oxygen enrichment in the area around the human nose. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method was used to judge the application’s effect of the individual oxygen-supply device in plateau mine, revealing the oxygen diffusion law under the influence of different oxygen enrichment factors. The orthogonal design and range analysis were used to measure the degree of influence of major factors such as oxygen-supply velocity, oxygen-supply concentration, and tunnel airflow velocity. The results demonstrate that the oxygen mass fraction of the air inhaled by the human had a positive correlation exponential function, a positive correlation linear function, and a negative correlation exponential function, respectively, concerning oxygen-supply velocity, oxygen-supply concentration, and tunnel airflow velocity. The range analysis revealed that the major influencing factors of oxygen enrichment in the tunnel of the plateau mine were, in a descending sequence, as follows: oxygen-supply concentration, tunnel airflow velocity, and oxygen-supply velocity, and the corresponding ranges were 2.86, 2.63, and 1.83, respectively. The individual oxygen-supply device achieved the best oxygen enrichment effect when the oxygen-supply velocity was 5 m/s, the oxygen-supply concentration was 60%, and the tunnel airflow velocity was 0.2 m/s, which increased the oxygen mass fraction of air inhaled by the human to 30.42%. This study has a positive guiding significance for the improvement of the respiration environment in the tunnel of plateau mine.

Increasing Oxygen Mass Fraction in Blind Headings of a Plateau Metal Mine by Oxygen Supply Duct Design: A CFD Modelling Approach

by Zijun Li, Shuqi Zhao, Rongrong Li, Yilong Huang, Yu Xu, Pinfang Song

Hypoxia problem has always been a difficult point in plateau tunneling projects. To solve this problem, a blind heading face in a plateau metal mine in western China was taken as the physical model, and the computational fluid dynamics was used to analyze the oxygen mass fraction distribution and oxygen-increasing effect in 1 m, 3 m, and 5 m roadway sections from the heading face. The optimal ventilation system was first built to obtain the optimum height and length of the airflow ducts. Then different cases with various oxygen supply duct designs were built in 2 scenarios. The results found that different oxygen supply duct design has significant influence on the oxygen distribution in the heading face. Also, each design has different optimal height of oxygen outlet. The oxygen supply effect is best when some small holes are made in the oxygen supply duct to diffuse oxygen to the working surface. The finding of this paper is helpful for effective and economical oxygen supply in roadway excavation of plateau metal mine and tunnel.

Identification of Copy Number Variations in Xiang and Kele Pigs

by Jian Xie, Rongrong Li, Sheng Li, Xueqin Ran, Jiafu Wang, Jicai Jiang, Pengju Zhao

Xiang and Kele pigs are two well-known local Chinese pig breeds that possess rich genetic resources and have enormous economic and scientific value. We performed a comprehensive genomic analysis of the copy number variations (CNVs) in these breeds. CNVs are one of the most important forms of genomic variation and have profound effects on phenotypic variation. In this study, PorcineSNP60 genotyping data from 98 Xiang pigs and 22 Kele pigs were used to identify CNVs. In total, 172 candidate CNV regions (CNVRs) were identified, ranging from 3.19 kb to 8175.26 kb and covering 80.41 Mb of the pig genome. Approximately 56.40% (97/172) of the CNVRs overlapped with those identified in seven previous studies, and 43.60% (75/172) of the identified CNVRs were novel. Of the identified CNVRs, 82 (47 gain, 33 loss, and two gain-loss events that covered 4.58 Mb of the pig genome) were found only in a Xiang population with a large litter size. In contrast, 13 CNVRs (8 gain and 5 loss events) were unique to a Xiang population with small litter sizes, and 30 CNVRs (14 loss and 16 gain events) were unique to Kele pigs. The CNVRs span approximately 660 annotated Sus scrofa genes that are significantly enriched for specific biological functions, such as sensory perception, cognition, reproduction, ATP biosynthetic processes, and neurological processes. Many CNVR-associated genes, particularly the genes involved in reproductive traits, differed between the Xiang populations with large and small litter sizes, and these genes warrant further investigation due to their importance in determining the reproductive performance of Xiang pigs. Our results provide meaningful information about genomic variation, which may be useful in future assessments of the associations between CNVs and important phenotypes in Xiang and Kele pigs to ultimately help protect these rare breeds.
