  • Does inclusive leadership mitigate employees’ turnover intention in the hospitality industry: a moderated sequential mediation model

by You Wu, Gang Xu, Shengqi Wang, Muhammad Asghar

Purpose: This paper aims to examine the relationship between inclusive leadership and employee turnover intention by identifying job embeddedness and work engagement as mediators and person−organization value congruence as a moderator. Design/methodology/approach: The data were collected from 491 full-time employees working in restaurants in China to test the study hypotheses using PLS-SEM (structural equation modeling). Findings: The study’s findings show that inclusive leadership negatively affects employee turnover intention. The results support sequential mediating roles (three mediating pathways) of job embeddedness and work engagement in the relationship between inclusive leadership and employee turnover intention. Besides, the findings show that person−organization value congruence moderates the relationship between inclusive leadership and job embeddedness, subsequently increasing employee work engagement and reducing turnover intention. Originality/value: This study contributes to the literature by illuminating how inclusive leadership affects turnover intention based on SET. The novel integration of job embeddedness and employee engagement as mediators, combined with the moderating role of person−organization value congruence, proposes new insights into the retention strategies of restaurant employees. The interaction effect of inclusive leadership and a person’s congruence values can reduce employee turnover in the restaurant industry. There are significant theoretical and practical implications, as well as insightful suggestions for the hospitality industry on improving inclusive leadership skills that can reduce employee turnover intention.

Signifying the Relationship between Fear of COVID-19, Psychological Concerns, Financial Concerns and Healthcare Employees Job Performance: A Mediated Model

by Muddassar Sarfraz, Xiangbo Ji, Muhammad Asghar, Larisa Ivascu, Ilknur Ozturk

The coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) has undoubtedly created immense health problems in the global healthcare sector. Apart from its impact on physical health, it has devastatingly affected the psychological well-being of individuals. Based on Affective Events Theory (AET), the current study aims to contemplate the relationship between Fear of COVID-19 (CVF), psychological concerns (PC), and financial concerns (FC) while considering the impact on the healthcare employees’ job performance (JP). Moreover, this study investigates the mediating role of job anxiety (ANX), stress (ST), and depression (DEP). The data were collected through an online structured questionnaire (Google Forms) from 489 employees working in the healthcare centers of Pakistan. The structured equation modeling (partial least square) approach is adopted for data analysis. The study results showed that Fear of COVID-19, psychological and financial concerns positively and significantly affect healthcare workers’ job performance. Depression, anxiety, and stress mediated the relationship between Fear of COVID-19, psychological concerns, financial concerns, and job performance. The study theoretically and practically contributes to the existing literature on psychological and mental health by providing a better understanding of the individual variables that affect employees’ job performance.

  • The relationship between polychronicity and job-affective well-being: The moderator role of workplace incivility in healthcare staff

by Tao Xiaolong, Nida Gull, Muhammad Asghar, Zhang Jianmin

BACKGROUND: Despite the increasing body of research on workplace incivility, the relationship between co-worker/supervisor incivilities and job-affective well-being have received relatively little consideration from the scholars. This study investigates the impact of polychronicity on nurses’ psychological well-being in the healthcare sector. OBJECTIVE: According to COR theory, this study’s main objective is to investigate the impact of two aspects of incivilities, co-worker, and supervisor incivilities, as the moderating effect on the relationship between polychronicity and job-affective psychological well-being. METHODS: The sample data was collected from 260 nurse’s staff who were working in hospitals. The proposed model hypothesis was tested through SPSS-Amos-structural equation modeling. RESULTS: The result shows that polychronic nurses show high job engagement and job performance in a hospital environment. This study’s findings revealed that co-workers and supervisors’ higher incivility weakens the positive relationship between polychronicity and job-affective well-being. CONCLUSION: Today, retained the employees are a perilous issue in every organization, especially in hospital sectors, where nurses are working in stressful working environments, facing bullying, harassment, and uncivil behavior from patients’ side, co-workers, and supervisor. These types of behaviors are not only affecting employees’ well-being, commitment, and job performance but also their mental health and intent to leave. Similarly, the effect on organizational goals, shareholders’ value, and progress makes an effective mechanism to control the negative behaviors that would be an apparent advantage for administration and managers to efficiently attain organizational goals.

Does Polychronicity Undermine Procrastination Behavior Through ICTs? Insights From Multi-Level Modeling

by Tao Xiaolong, Nida Gull, Zubair Akram, Muhammad Asghar, Zhang Jianmin

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are widely used in developing nations as a dynamic solution for socio-economic development. Pakistan has seen a rapid increase in the use of ICTs during the previous decade. The purpose of this study is to examine how polychronicity affects procrastination behavior when it is influenced by ICTs. According to this study, individuals are described as a dynamic and destructive kind of self-regulation failure in ICTs. Procrastination is a behavior that prevents emerging economies from growing from developing countries. We researched the group-level polychronicity influence of the individual behavior and the mechanism of procrastination from a team-level perspective of worker behavior. This study data collected 231 workers from 76 groups working in ICTs in Pakistan. The results revealed that the group polychronicity and the behavior of group members were positively linked by taking the work overload as a mediator. Moreover, group cohesiveness moderates the role between polychronicity and work overload diminishing the mediation procession between-group polychronicity and individual procrastination. The practical importance of this study is to understand the causes of procrastination, and how to decrease this obstacle to a fairer workplace. It also helps to decide the professional route that is most suited to personality characteristics.

Paternalistic Leadership, Polychronicity, and Life Satisfaction of Nurses: The Role of Work-Family Conflict and Family-Work Conflict in Public Sector Hospitals

by Nida Gull, Zhejie Song, Rui Shi, Muhammad Asghar, Muhammad Asim Rafique, Yupeng Liu

Based on the leadership literature, this study investigates how paternalistic leadership (PL) and polychronicity (PC) affect the life satisfaction (LS) of nurses, specifically in public hospitals. Moreover, the mediating role of work-family conflict (WFC) and family-work conflict (FWC) is also assessed the relationships among PL, PC, and LS. The cross-sectional study design is used in this study due to its cost benefits and the convenience of data collection at a single point in time. A survey questionnaire is used to collect data from 226 nurses, and the Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique is used to investigate the proposed model. The findings of this study confirmed that PL and PC have a positive relationship with LS. Furthermore, WFC partially mediated the relationships among PL, PC, and LS. In addition, FWC partially mediated the relationship between PL and LS; the role of FWC in mediating the relationship between PC and LS has been found to be insignificant. Employees with high PC and those whose supervisors show PL behavior become more satisfied with their lives and have relatively low WFC and FWC. In addition, the theoretical and practical implications have also been discussed.
