Thermal Stability and Barrier Properties of Polyamide 6 Reinforced by Carbazole Based Copolymerization

by Yong Yi, Jianlin Li, Wenzhi Wang, Chunhua Wang, Yuejun Liu

Polyamide 6 (PA6) is limited in its application in precision and high-temperature fields due to its high moisture absorption, low heat resistance, and poor barrier properties. To overcome these intrinsic deficiencies, a rigid 9-(carboxyphenyl)carbazole-based diacid monomer (CzIPA) was incorporated into the PA6 backbone via one-step melt polycondensation. Structural analyses confirmed successful copolymer formation and effective modulation of hydrogen-bonding interactions and chain rigidity. The introduction of the bulky carbazole units markedly enhanced the thermal and physical properties of PA6. The glass transition temperature increased by up to 35.5 °C, while the maximum decomposition temperature rose by 23.8 °C, reflecting the reduced chain mobility and strengthened thermal resistance. The decreased amide-group density led to a 15% reduction in water absorption, improving dimensional stability. The Young’s modulus, flexural strength, and flexural modulus of the prepared copolymers were significantly improved compared to PA6, while the toughness was slightly reduced. Furthermore, oxygen and water-vapor permeabilities were simultaneously reduced by 30–35%, attributed to restricted diffusion pathways in the modified microstructure. Despite the increased rigidity, the copolymers maintained good melt processability with clear shear-thinning behavior. This study demonstrates CzIPA copolymerization as an efficient structural design strategy for producing high-performance PA6 materials with enhanced thermal stability, lower hygroscopicity, and superior barrier properties.

An Intrinsically Transparent Polyamide Film with Superior Toughness and Great Optical Performance

by Jianlin Li, Jianlin Li, Yong Yi, Yong Yi, Chunhua Wang, Chunhua Wang, Weijian Lu, Weijian Lu, Mingxi Liao, Mingxi Liao, et al.

Polyamide 66 was extensively utilized in various applications contributed by its excellent mechanical performance and outstanding durability. However, its high crystallinity renders it to have low transparency, which seriously limits its application in optical devices. Herein, a highly transparent polyamide (PA) 66-based copolymer was reported using 4,4′-diaminodicyclohexylmethane (PACM), adipic acid, and polyamide 66 salt as the reaction monomers. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) analysis revealed that the crystal phase of the synthesized PA66/PACM6 displayed a clear transition from α to γ as the PACM6 increased accompanied by a decreased intensity in the diffraction peak of the copolymer, whose transmittance was successfully adjusted reaching as high as 92.5% (at 550 nm) when the PACM6 was 40 wt%. Moreover, the copolymer with a higher content of PACM6 exhibited larger toughness. On the other hand, the biaxially oriented films of PA66/PACM6 (20 wt%) were also prepared, and it was found that the transparency of the PA66/PACM6 copolymer could be further enhanced via adjusting the stretching ratio of the film. Furthermore, the mechanical strength of the biaxially oriented PA66/PACM6 was also improved with the increase in the orientation degree in the stretching process, indicating that the physical properties of the transparent PA66 were significantly influenced by its alicyclic structure, and the introduction of PACM into PA66 was capable of effectively improving the optical and crystalline characteristics of PA66, revealing that the synthetic strategy has great potential for guiding the design and development of transparent polyamide materials.

Synthesis and Properties of Polyamide 6 Random Copolymers Containing an Aromatic Imide Structure

by Yingwei Zhang, Chunhua Wang, Yong Yi, Wenzhi Wang, Jun Yang

In order to adjust the properties of polyamide 6 (PA6) and expand its application, a new strategy of introducing an aromatic imide structure into the PA6 chain through the random copolymerization method is reported. The diimide diacid monomer was first synthesized by the dehydration and cyclization of pyromellitic dianhydride and 6-aminocaproic acid before it reacted with 1,6-hexamethylene diamine to form poly(amide imide) (PAI) salt, and finally synthesized PA6/PAI random copolymers containing an aromatic imide structure by the random copolymerization of ε-caprolactam and PAI salt. The introduction of an aromatic imide structural unit into the PA6 chain could have a great influence on its properties. As the content of PAI increases, the crystallinity (Xc) and melting temperature (Tm) of the PA6/PAI random copolymer gradually decrease, but its glass transition temperature (Tg) increases obviously. When the PAI content is 20 wt%, the copolymer PA6/PAI-20 has the best comprehensive performance and not only has high thermal stabilities but also excellent mechanical properties (high strength, high modulus, and good toughness) and dielectric properties (low dielectric constant and dielectric loss). Moreover, these properties are significantly superior to those of PA6. Such high-performance PA6 random copolymers can provide great promise for the wider applications of PA6 materials.

  • Synthesis and Characterization of Bio-Based Poly(amide imide)s Derived from 11-Aminoundecanoic Acid and 1,10-Diaminodecane

by Yingwei Zhang, Chunhua Wang, Yong Yi, Wenzhi Wang, Jun Yang, Yibo Lou, Jianlin Li

Three diimide diacid (DIDA) monomers possessing different rigid groups (phenyl, biphenyl and diphenyl ether group) between two imide rings were prepared through the dehydration cyclization reaction of 11-aminoundecanoic acid and aromatic dianhydride. These DIDA monomers were polymerized with 1,10-diaminodecane to produce bio-based poly(amide imide)s (PAIs) by the ecofriendly and low-cost two-step polymerization method. All the PAIs have high thermal stabilities, and their initial thermal decomposition temperatures are above 400 °C at 5% weight loss. When the rigid group between two imide rings is changed from phenyl to diphenyl ether group, the glass transition temperature of PAI shows a decreasing trend from 54.7 °C to 42.4 °C, the tensile strength also reduces from 62.4 MPa to 49.5 MPa, but elongation at break increases from 3.7% to 6.8%. Moreover, the PAI with phenyl group between two imide rings is a semicrystalline polymer, while the PAI with biphenyl or diphenyl ether group is an amorphous polymer. It is a viable way to regulate the properties of PAIs by changing the structure of rigid group between two imide rings. Such bio-based PAIs with high thermal stabilities, low glass transition temperatures and good mechanical strength will provide great promise for their wider applications.

Spoon-like Beams Generated with Exponential Phases

by Lei Guo, Tian Xia, Yiping Xu, Yan Xiong, Xian Leng, Shaohua Tao, Yonghong Tian, Shubo Cheng

In this paper, we report a new kind of beam, named “spoon-like” beams, generated with the exponential phase. The intensity distributions and transverse energy flow of the spoon-like beam at the focal plane are analyzed theoretically and experimentally. The results demonstrate that the size of the spoon-like beam becomes enlarged with the increasing power exponent n, and the length of the spoon-like intensity trajectory becomes shorter with the increasing parameter p. Furthermore, there is an intensity gradient along the spoon-like trajectory of the beam, which introduces the intensity-gradient force exerted onto microparticles. The experiment on optical tweezers demonstrates that the focused beams can create spoon-like traps for the two-dimensional manipulation of particles.

  • Thermal, morphological and mechanical properties of glass fiber reinforced star‐branched polyamide 6

by Chunhua Wang, Yingwei Zhang, Yong Yi, Dengwang Lai, Jun Yang, Wenzhi Wang

Using star‐branched polyamide 6 (SPA6) with hexafunctional cyclotriphosphazene core as a matrix resin and glass fiber (GF) as a reinforcing material, star‐branched polyamide 6/glass fiber (SPA6/GF) composites with different GF content were prepared by melt‐compounding method. The star‐branched structure of SPA6 and GF content have great effects on the properties of SPA6/GF composites. Compared with linear polyamide 6 (LPA6), SPA6 with star‐branched structure has low viscosity, high melt flowability and good impregnation and adhesion to GF, which endow SPA6/GF composites outstanding processability, good surface qualities and excellent mechanical properties even when the content of GF reaches 60 wt%. The use of SPA6 resin with star‐branched structure fundamentally solves the industry problem of traditional LPA6 resin in high‐filled modification. Such high‐performance SPA6/GF composites will provide great promise for large‐scale applications.
