The Optimization and Method Analysis of Sowing Depth Adjustment Structure in Twin-Shaft Rotary Planter

by Shenghe Bai, Xin Dong, Yulong Ding, Weipeng Zhang, Yanwei Yuan, Kang Niu, Liming Zhou, Bo Zhao, Lijing Liu, Ran An, et al.

Conventional wheat planters often suffer from poor uniformity and stability in sowing depth. To address these issues, a new sowing depth adjustment method based on soil coverage regulation was proposed, and the corresponding working parameters were established for a twin-shaft rotary tillage wheat planter. Following the “shallow rotation + deep rotation” twin-shaft plot preparation scheme, the sowing depth adjustment unit’s mechanical structure was designed, and the dynamic adjustment unit of sowing depth and the twin-shaft rotary planter were designed and verified. The experiments primarily involved parameter optimization testing of the sowing depth adjustment unit to determine both its optimal structural configuration and range of operating parameters. Using quadratic regression orthogonal testing, the optimal operational parameters were determined as follows: a secondary rotary tillage knife group rotation speed of 330 r/min, an operational speed of 4 km/h, and a soil coverage adjustment mechanism distance of 610 mm. The highest qualified rate for seeding depth reached 99.246%, while the minimum seeding depth variation coefficient was 6.521%. Field trials indicated that with a secondary rotary tillage knife group rotation speed of 330 r/min, a working speed of 4 km/h, and a compaction roller adjustment distance of 610 mm, the seeding depth qualified rate was 98.803%, and the variation coefficient of seeding depth was 6.881%. This method enables precise regulation of sowing depth in twin-shaft rotary planters, significantly enhancing the quality of wheat sowing operations.

Multiscale Modeling and Simulation of Falling Collision Damage Sensitivity of Kiwifruit

by Yue Zhu, Licheng Zhu, Wenbei Wang, Bo Zhao, Zhenhao Han, Ruixue Wang, Yanwei Yuan, Kunlei Lu, Xuguang Feng, Xiaoxi Hu

Falling damage is the most common form of damage sustained by kiwifruit during the process of picking and post-processing, and it is difficult to conduct a quantitative analysis of this phenomenon through traditional experimental methods. In order to deeply understand the sensitivity of kiwifruit to falling collision damage, the finite element numerical simulation method was used to evaluate and predict the sensitivity of kiwifruit to falling collision damage during harvesting. First, we obtained the appearance characteristics of kiwifruit through reverse engineering technology and determined the geometric and mechanical property parameters of kiwifruit through physical mechanics experiments. Then, according to the characteristics of fruit tissue structure, a multiscale finite element model, including the skin, pulp, and core, was constructed to simulate the effects of different falling heights, collision angles, and contact surface materials on fruit damage, and the accuracy of the model was verified through falling experiments. Finally, based on the simulation results, the Box–Behnken design was employed within the response surface methodology to establish a sensitivity prediction model for the drop damage sensitivity of kiwifruit across different contact materials. The results showed that the maximum relative error between the speed change obtained using finite element simulation and the speed obtained by the high-speed camera was 5.19%. The model showed high rationality in energy distribution, with the maximum value of hourglass energy not exceeding 0.08% of the internal energy. On the contact surface material with a large elastic modulus, a higher falling height and larger collision angle will significantly increase the risk of fruit bruise. When the contact surface material was a steel plate, the falling height was 1 m, and the collision angle was 90°; the maximum bruise sensitivity of kiwifruit reached 6716.07 mm3 J−1. However, when the contact surface material was neoprene, the falling height was 0.25 m, and the collision angle was 0°, the damage sensitivity was the lowest, at 1570.59 mm3 J−1. The multiscale finite element model of kiwifruit falling collision constructed in this study can accurately predict the damage of kiwifruit during falling collision and provide an effective tool for the quantitative analysis of kiwifruit falling collision damage. At the same time, this study can also provide guidance for the design and optimization of the loss reduction method of the harvesting mechanism, which has important theoretical significance and practical value.

Detection Method for Rice Seedling Planting Conditions Based on Image Processing and an Improved YOLOv8n Model

by Bo Zhao, Qifan Zhang, Yangchun Liu, Yongzhi Cui, Baixue Zhou

In response to the need for precision and intelligence in the assessment of transplanting machine operation quality, this study addresses challenges such as low accuracy and efficiency associated with manual observation and random field sampling for the evaluation of rice seedling planting conditions. Therefore, in order to build a seedling insertion condition detection system, this study proposes an approach based on the combination of image processing and deep learning. The image processing stage is primarily applied to seedling absence detection, utilizing the centroid detection method to obtain precise coordinates of missing seedlings with an accuracy of 93.7%. In the target recognition stage, an improved YOLOv8 Nano network model is introduced, leveraging deep learning algorithms to detect qualified and misplaced seedlings. This model incorporates ASPP (atrous spatial pyramid pooling) to enhance the network’s multiscale feature extraction capabilities, integrates SimAM (Simple, Parameter-free Attention Module) to improve the model’s ability to extract detailed seedling features, and introduces AFPN (Asymptotic Feature Pyramid Network) to facilitate direct interaction between non-adjacent hierarchical levels, thereby enhancing feature fusion efficiency. Experimental results demonstrate that the enhanced YOLOv8n model achieves precision (P), recall (R), and mean average precision (mAP) of 95.5%, 92.7%, and 95.2%, respectively. Compared to the original YOLOv8n model, the enhanced model shows improvements of 3.6%, 0.9%, and 1.7% in P, R, and mAP, respectively. This research provides data support for the efficiency and quality of transplanting machine operations, contributing to the further development and application of unmanned field management in subsequent rice seedling cultivation.

Online Recognition of Small Vegetable Seed Sowing Based on Machine Vision

by Weipeng Zhang, Bo Zhao, Shengbo Gao, Yuxi Ji, Liming Zhou, Kang Niu, Zhaomei Qiu, Xin Jin

The lightweight, small diameter, and irregular shape of small vegetable seeds create difficulties for online monitoring of sowing quality. We propose a machine vision-based online monitoring method with a sowing test bench designed to address the challenges. Vision devices and image processing systems are employed to detect the quality of seed sowing. Firstly, the seed segmentation image is obtained by completing the steps of median filtering, graying and image segmentation. We then implement the Circumscribed circle method to detect the position of the seed. Afterward, the coordinate system is converted using calibrated results to eliminate non-seed impurities. Finally, we count the number of identified seeds to evaluate the recognition accuracy. The trial compared three algorithms: the image segmentation algorithm OTSU, the critical point localization algorithm SIFT, and the algorithm designed in the experiment. The algorithm we designed outperformed the others regarding recognition accuracy and processing time. The experimental method employed in the study encompasses various functionalities, including seeding counting, understanding detection, replaying, and monitoring deviations from seed bands during sowing. Cabbage seeds (1.50mm-2.00mm), tomato seeds (1.00mm-1.50mm), and radish seeds (0.50mm-1.00mm) were selected as the experimental subjects due to the uniform particle size distribution. The results demonstrate that the relative error between the online image recognition algorithm and the system’s seeding rate monitoring is below 3.0%. Moreover, the accuracy of missed seeding monitoring is 92.5%, while the accuracy of deviation monitoring during seeding is 92.0%. We observed that the image recognition algorithm employed in the system achieved a processing time of 0.29 seconds, with a seed band recognition rate of 96.8%, fulfilling the monitoring requirements for small seed sowing experiments. The processed images and collected data are presented in real-time on the upper computer terminal. This study significantly contributes to the advancement of small-grain vegetable seed sowing monitoring technology.

Winter Wheat Yield Estimation Based on Multi-Temporal and Multi-Sensor Remote Sensing Data Fusion

by Yang Li, Bo Zhao, Jizhong Wang, Yanjun Li, Yanwei Yuan

Accurate yield estimation before the wheat harvest is very important for precision management, maintaining grain market stability, and ensuring national food security. In this study, to further improve the accuracy of winter wheat yield estimation, machine learning models, including GPR, SVR, and DT, were employed to construct yield estimation models based on the single and multiple growth periods, incorporating the color and multispectral vegetation indexes. The results showed the following: (1) Overall, the performance and accuracy of the yield estimation models based on machine learning were ranked as follows: GPR, SVR, DT. (2) The combination of color indexes and multispectral vegetation indexes effectively improved the yield estimation accuracy of winter wheat compared with the multispectral vegetation indexes and color indexes alone. The accuracy of the yield estimation models based on the multiple growth periods was also higher than that of the single growth period models. The model with multiple growth periods and multiple characteristics had the highest accuracy, with an R2 of 0.83, an RMSE of 297.70 kg/hm2, and an rRMSE of 4.69%. (3) For the single growth period, the accuracy of the yield estimation models based on the color indexes was lower than that of the yield estimation models based on the multispectral vegetation indexes. For the multiple growth periods, the accuracy of the models constructed by the two types of indexes was very close, with R2 of 0.80 and 0.80, RMSE of 330.37 kg/hm2 and 328.95 kg/hm2, and rRMSE of 5.21% and 5.19%, respectively. This indicates that the low-cost RGB camera has good potential for crop yield estimation. Multi-temporal and multi-sensor remote sensing data fusion can further improve the accuracy of winter wheat yield estimation and provide methods and references for winter wheat yield estimation.

by Feiyun Wang, Chengxu Lv, Yuxuan Pan, Liming Zhou, Bo Zhao

External defects of kiwifruit seriously affect its added commercialization. To address the existing problems, kiwifruit external defects detection has a few methods for detecting multi-category defects and weak adaptability to complex images. In this study, we proposed ResNet combined with CBAM for the automatic detection of external defects in kiwifruit. The experiment first built an acquisition device to obtain high-quality images. The optimal fusion scheme of ResNet and CBAM was investigated, the network training parameters were optimized, and Adam was used to accelerate the convergence speed of the model. It was found that the average recognition accuracy of ResNet34 + CBAM for kiwifruit was 99.6%, and all evaluation metrics were greater than 99%. Meanwhile, the experiment selected AlexNet, VGG16, InceptionV3, ResNet34, and ResNet34 + CBAM for comparison. The results showed that the recognition accuracy of ResNet34 + CBAM was 7.9%, 12.7%, 11.8%, and 4.3% higher than that of AlexNet, VGG16, InceptionV3, and ResNet34, respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that ResNet34 + CBAM has the advantages of high recognition accuracy and good stability for kiwifruit external defect sample detection. It provides a technical guarantee for online detection and sorting of kiwifruit and other fruit defects.

Development of effective model for non-destructive detection of defective kiwifruit based on graded lines

by Feiyun Wang, Chengxu Lv, Lizhong Dong, Xilong Li, Pengfei Guo, Bo Zhao

The accurate detection of external defects in kiwifruit is an important part of postharvest quality assessment. Previous studies have not considered the problems posed by the actual grading environment. In this study, we designed a novel approach based on improved Yolov5 to achieve real-time and efficient non-destructive detection of multiple defect categories in kiwifruit. First, a kiwifruit image acquisition device based on grading lines was developed to enhance the image acquisition. Subsequently, a kiwifruit dataset was constructed based on the external defect characteristics and a new data enhancement method was proposed to augment the kiwifruit samples. Thereafter, the SPD-Conv and DW-Conv modules were combined to improve Yolov5s, with EIOU as the loss calculation function. The results demonstrated that the improved model training loss value was 0.013 lower, the convergence was accelerated, the number of parameters was reduced, and the computational effort was increased. The detection accuracies of the samples in the test set, which included healthy, leaf-rubbing damaged, healed cuts or scarred, and sunburned samples, were 98.8%, 98.7%, 97.6%, and 95.9%, respectively, with an overall detection accuracy of 97.7%. The detection time was 8.0 ms, thereby meeting real-time sorting demands. The average detection accuracy and model size of SSD, Yolov5s, Yolov7, and Yolov5-Ours were compared. When the confidence threshold was 0.5, the detection accuracy of Yolov5-Ours was 10% and 6.4% higher than that of SSD and Yolov5s, respectively. In terms of the model size, Yolov5-Ours was approximately 6.5- and 4-fold smaller than SSD and Yolov7, respectively. Thus, Yolov5-Ours achieved the highest accuracy, adaptability, and robustness for the detection of all kiwifruit categories as well as a small volume and portability. These results can provide technical support for the non-destructive detection and grading of agricultural products in the future.

Development of Cotton Picker Fire Monitoring System Based on GA-BP Algorithm

by Weipeng Zhang, Bo Zhao, Shengbo Gao, Yuankun Zheng, Liming Zhou, Suchun Liu

Due to the characteristics of the cotton picker working in the field and the physical characteristics of cotton, it is easy to burn during the operation, and it is difficult to be detected, monitored, and alarmed. In this study, a fire monitoring system of cotton pickers based on GA optimized BP neural network model was designed. By integrating the monitoring data of SHT21 temperature and humidity sensors and CO concentration monitoring sensors, the fire situation was predicted, and an industrial control host computer system was developed to monitor the CO gas concentration in real time and display it on the vehicle terminal. The BP neural network was optimized by using the GA genetic algorithm as the learning algorithm, and the data collected by the gas sensor were processed by the optimized network, which effectively improved the data accuracy of CO concentration during fires. In this system, the CO concentration in the cotton box of the cotton picker was validated, and the measured value of sensor was compared with the actual value, which verified the effectiveness of the optimized BP neural network model with GA. The experimental verification showed that the system monitoring error rate was 3.44%, the accurate early warning rate was over 96.5%, and the false alarm rate and the missed alarm rate were less than 3%. In this study, the fire of cotton pickers can be monitored in real time and an early warning can be made in time, and a new method was provided for accurate monitoring of fire in the field operation of cotton pickers.
